Setting Priorities:
What do you value most in personal and professional life?

Rank the following factors in order of their importance to you, with 1 being the most important:

  1. ___ Having time for myself

  2. ___ Having time for my family

  3. ___ Feeling like my household is under control

  4. ___ Being able to turn down work that I don't enjoy

  5. ___ Being visible to and respected by my colleagues

  6. ___ Having a high level of income

  7. ___ Being promoted or being a leader within my company

  8. ___ Advancing quickly within my profession

  • Now, total your rankings separately for factors 1-4 and factors 5-8.

  • If you have a significant lower score for factors 1-4: you're probably willing to make some professional sacrifices for the sake of time with your family and the freedom to make your own choice. A part-time schedule or time away from work may be viable for you.

  • If you have a significant lower score for factors 5-8: professional advancement is a priority for you. Considering a reduced work schedule may not make sense for you, because your advancements may be delayed.

If you have trouble ranking the factors, then you're ambivalent about professional and personal priorities. You need to think deliberately about what you're willing to sacrifice for the sake of family or career.
